I suggest checking out the “CristinaSkyBox” blog post “Blog Bytes”. Ana Cristina has short descriptions of several blogging platforms that may suit your needs.
I didn’t see Tumblr on the list but I highly recommend it for teachers writing for other teachers (not for classroom blogs). I do not recommend it for students.
