Follow some striking Chicago teachers/supporters!
OK…I usually never share negative aspects of teaching in Chicago, but I just want the striking teachers to know that I totally support them and know what they are going through. I participated in the last CPS strike 25 years ago as a new teacher. Here goes…When my program was cut last year and I left my school after 25 years, I left a school built in 1888, with chipped (holes actually) poorly repaired walls, uncovered electrical wires, crappy dull blue paint, boys and girls using the same washrooms, not all rooms were air conditioned (and many didn’t work), major plumbing problems, major heating problems, rat infestations, old/falling apart furniture for kids and teachers, students were not allowed to use current textbooks during summer school (which I taught for 20 years), unappealing/unhealthy food in lunchroom, old computers in lab and classrooms, no recess, and oh so much more but I won’t go on. The school was like a dungeon. How many other people would work in such deplorable working conditions? If CPS teachers didn’t care there wouldn’t be a strike. They are fighting for the children and themselves. I KNOW CPS teachers deserve respect and improved working conditions. Being a teacher is a stressful, rewarding job and teachers are warriors for children. Stay strong CPS Teachers! Not sure if all of these are teachers, but they seem to be actually in Chicago and picketing.
