New! Mayfaire…Smart addition to Maps for Kids!
#sschat #edtech #maps
Via Educational Technology and Mobile Learning
I just finished checking out Mayfaire. It took a few minutes to figure it out (pretty ez). Students can use this to create basic maps and add pins to locations of their choice via specific address or general area. Maps can be published online via a URL providing you have a Google account. If you don’t have an account you could simply take a screenshot of the map but it would no longer be interactive but could be printed.
Choose regular or satellite view.
Mapfaire is free! (also has a paid pro version)
“Go ahead, play with it as much as you want. When you decide to publish your map, you’ll only need a Google account - no registration required.”
Included in  Maps for Kids (stuffed with goodies)

LiveBinder update not to miss!
One of the best…Paises@ is a super interactive map tool.
#sschat #spedchat #elemchat #maps
It allows you to click on any country and find central facts and information about it. Windows pop up with the desired information and can be easily moved around the board. These windows can also be printed. Available in three languages, English, Spanish, and Portuguese.
Some of the information available…
Summary
Population
Social Indicators
Economy
Networks
Environment
Millennium Goals
The site is quite comprehensive and very easy to navigate. Paises gave me the feel of one of Tom Cruises cool interactive boards in Mission Impossible with sound and all.

Screenshot
Added to Maps for Kids and  Countries for Kids
I learned about this on Twitter but can’t find who tweeted it. If it was you please let me know so I can give you credit and a great BIG Thank You!

I just learned about Wikihood from Free Technology for Teachers. According to Richard it’s “ like having an encyclopedia and an atlas side by side”.  There are many ways to search for what you are looking for.  Read Richard’s post to learn more about Wikihood. Very nice!

StepMap

Hi Karen,

I just stumbled upon your blog entry in regard to StepMap. Just wanted to say thanks for mentioning us. Feel free to contact me if you have questions or suggestions. Our English version at stepmap.com is not quit as advanced as the German version (www.stepmap.de) but we’re trying to add new features soon.

Best regards from Berlin, Germany

Ole Brandenburg, Managing Director

Ole…Glad you stopped by. I really like StepMap. Thanks for continuing to make it better.

Karen

Three new map sites have been added to my “Maps for Kids” LiveBinder.

From the site: “Historypin was created by the social movement We Are What We Do, in partnership with Google.

We Are What We Do is a global social movement that creates ideas, products and tools that make it easy for people to make a difference to big social and environmental issues.
Historypin is one in a series of projects created as part of We Are What We Do’s campaign to get generations talking more, sharing more and coming together more often.
There has been a major trendin different generations spending less time together. Which is a shame. Old people know stuff young people don’t. And young people know stuff old people don’t.While they’re using Historypin, a lot of young people will be asking older people for photos, and a lot of older people will be asking young people when to click and when to double click.

From the Site: “Browse local data from the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey, based on samples from 2005 to 2009.”
The interactive maps present the distribution of racial and ethnic groups, income, housing and families, and education across the United States.

From the site: “Dimensions takes important places, events and things, and overlays them onto a map of where you are.”

America’s Fifty Nifty States LiveBinder
If you are looking for resources to help you teach lessons about the 50 states you may find what you need in my LiveBinder “America’s Fifty Nifty States”.  In it you will find resources galore for each state, including maps, worksheets, coloring pages, fun facts, folklore, recipes, games and much more.

My school has a “United States Day” each year where classes present a state to the rest of the school.  I put this binder together for them and also want to share it with you.  Hope you find this resource useful.
