I hate that I missed today’s #elemchat on Twitter. I found out about it just as it was ending.
Todays topic was attention seekers. Working at a school with student who have emotional and behavioral special needs this is always something I deal with on a daily basis. Here are some great tips and suggestions that were offered during the session. I hope I got all the attributions correct!
***These are also great people to follow on twitter!
The best ways to motivate students to make the best choices is to really know and understand reasons behind their actions @FlourishingKids
The softer I speak, the more they want to hear what I am saying! @NancyTeaches
Sometimes just standing next to the attention seeker with your hand on their shoulder helps @NancyTeaches
Angry kids need choices and a voice! @NancyTeaches
Allow attention seekers a chance in front of classroom. They suddenly get shy. @DorieDance
Sometimes you have to find out what that child really likes and use that (art, music have worked for students I taught)  @cybraryman
Sometimes just standing next to the attention seeker with your hand on their shoulder helps @NancyTeaches
Give them the choice as long as they understand the consequences @louwinsr
Make them a note taker w/clipboard @matt_gomez
Kids need to know what is coming next so they feel calm and secure. Routines help! @NancyTeaches
Being sure to establish rapport with attention seekers helps. Find their interests and talk with them about them @dsyherd
When my kids are off it is usually my fault…not enough challenging work, responses, consistency etc. @pschooltoolbox
#elemchat takes place on Twitter every Saturday at 5pm est. Be there to learn and share.
