Oooooo! My skin is crawling with excitement over Bugscope!
#edtech #scichat 1stchat #2ndchat #4thchat #5thchat #3rdchat
VERY COOL!
What is Bugscope?
“The Bugscope project provides free interactive access to a scanning electron microscope (SEM) so that students anywhere in the world can explore the microscopic world of insects. This educational outreach program from the Beckman Institute’sImaging Technology Group at the University of Illinois supports K-16 classrooms worldwide.
Bugscope allows teachers everywhere to provide students with the opportunity to become microscopists themselves—the kids propose experiments, explore insect specimens at high-magnification, and discuss what they see with our scientists—all from a regular web browser over a standard broadband internet connection.”
How does it work?
“You sign up, ask your students to find some bugs, and mail them to us. We accept your application, schedule your session, and prepare the bugs for insertion into the electron microscope. When your session time arrives, we put the bug(s) into the microscope and set it up for your classroom. Then you and your students login over the web and control the microscope. We’ll be there via chat to guide you and answer the kids’ questions.”
***I love that you can also pop in as a guest at a live session. Awesome!

Fraboom Online Children’s Museum is simply the best of it’s kind.
#elemchat #spedchat #sschat #scichat #digitalcitizenship
It is on my list of “30 Sites for Student’s Who Finish Early”, and I really wanted to bring special attention to it because it is in the top 5 of my students’ favorite sites. Mine too!
Fraboom has fantastic educational games, videos, interactive books, and even a live drawing class where the cheerful instructor speaks to you by name and will answer your questions. This blows students’ minds the first time they try it. They can’t believe that someone on their computer screen is actually talking to them and that they can respond via a chat box. Fantastic application for digital literacy and citizenship.
Students participating in the daily doodle can chat with the instructor but not any other “students” taking the class. My students have taken classes with kids from all over the country as well as kids in other rooms at our school. I have never seen anything like this anywhere else for kids. Totally safe….and FREE!!!

Learning about insects? Then you should check out Harry’s Big Adventure by Terminix. Lots to do and learn here (videos, audio, games and more) and you can also request a Terminix expert come to your classroom. How fantastic is that!
