New Citizen Scientists Project from @scistarter looking for students to participate in. #scichat #science4kids
I just received an email notifying me of the new project. Looks like an interesting one. Find out more below.
Project Merccuri  “Project MERCCURI is an investigation of how microbes found in buildings on Earth (in public buildings, stadiums, etc) compare to those on board the biggest building ever built in space – the International Space Station (ISS).
The project provides an opportunity for YOU— citizen scientists and student scientists —to participate in the research by using kits we will send you to collect microbes from surface areas in buildings or even your own cell phone or shoes.” Cost $0
Learn more about SciStarter below. (from a previous post)
SciStarter Awesome website for Citizen Scientists…including kids!
Students can become “citizen scientists” by taking part and contributing to science projects led by real scientists.
Choose project by activity or topic. Requirements and eligibility are listed for each project. Free registration is required to find more details on projects. This can be done by the teacher.
EXCELLENT resource! Students will love knowing that their input/research makes a difference.

Action! Who is your Favorite Scientist?
#scichat Via @ictmagic
Discover the  favorite scientists of leading researchers at Nottingham Trent University through video at My Favorite Scientist. Great collection of videos where students will learn about the achievements of some well-known and lesser-known scientists. Currently there are 18 videos featured.

After watching  a video or two students could be challenged to create their own video/presentation based on a scientist of their choosing. I really liked how they used simple art work throughout the videos. Some students don’t like to draw/illustrate and this is a perfect example of how simple art can add to a presentation. It may make them feel more comfortable and give it a try.

Neat site for Citizen Scientists!
iNaturalist.org where you can record what you see in nature, meet other nature lovers, and learn about the natural world.

How cool is this? Amazingly cool if I do say so myself.
And scientists may also use what you record.
I just signed up (easy with an email). Looking forward to sharing this site with other teachers. I think it will be a wonderful resource where students can share their world as well as learn from what others are sharing. I saw many spectacular photographs as well as great info to go along with them. Now that is is getting warmer this is a perfect tool for classrooms to use.
Educational Application
Students can take pictures of insects, animals, etc. that are in their neighborhood and bring them to school to write about them and upload to the site. You can do this as a classroom or as individuals. A fieldtrip with cameras on hand may also lend itself to this unique opportunity.
