United Classrooms - Connects students, teachers, classrooms, parents and the world.

Consider it a safe Global Social Learning network. It can be used to connect your students with each other or with other classrooms from around the world. You decide.
Projects are also available if you wish to participate.
K-12 teachers can create free accounts
I just watched their “tutorial” video and this looks wonderful. Lots of checks and balances to keep students safe. Teachers can moderate everything easily.
This is one to definitely check into.
Tutorial video below. Explains the basics of the program in detail.

10 ways for teachers to collaborate…

adventuresinlearning:

People talk a great deal about the ’21st century skills’ of collaboration, communication, critical thinking and creativity. Do we model them ourselves, as teachers?

10 ways to collaborate for teaching and learning…

1. Open the door.

Let go of the idea that you have to teach in ‘your way’ in ‘your space’. Team teach. Invite people in. Share spaces. Learn together.

2. Talk.

Collaborative planning is a constant conversation. (Thanks, Fiona Zinn). Share what worked and what didn’t. Build on each others’ ideas. Talk about how you’ll use shared spaces.

3. Be open-minded.

There is more than one way of doing things. Be open to new ways of thinking and new ways of learning. Learning can look different from the way it did when you went to school.

4. Include your students.

Ensure you are part of their learning community rather than boss of the learning. Ask for feedback. Talk about the process of learning. Listen to their voices. It’s their learning.

5. Make learning trans-disciplinary.

Learning takes place when we connect new knowledge or ideas with what we already knew. The more connections, the stronger the learning. Create opportunities for connections across disciplines.

6. Share.

Share your time, your ideas and your expertise. Share tasks and resources between team members. Share responsibility with your students.

7. Focus on the arts.

Work with the art teacher and the music teacher. Use the arts to enrich learning in any subject area.

8.Establish an in-school PLN.

Learn from and with your personal learning network. It might be your grade level team, teachers of the same subject or, best of all, a mixed group. Share practice. Build on each others’ ideas.

9. Establish an online PLN.

Use social media to connect and collaborate with educators anywhere, any time. Get the most out of Twitter. Ask someone to help you get started on building an online network. (I will)

10. Create a global collaboration.

Use Skype or Voicethread to collaborate with a class in another country. Exchange ideas and beliefs. Learn from each other.

Do you collaborate to make teaching and learning richer? How?

More ’10 ways’ posts.

“The iEARN Collaboration Centre enables youth to learn with, rather than simply about, the world. Find project partners quickly. Read 200+ project descriptions and browse student-produced media.”
“iEARN projects are designed and facilitated by educators and students worldwide, and result in a range of collaborative final “products.”
I really liked many of the projects at iEARN. I also liked that student-produced media can be uploaded and shared on the site. Free registration is required for this feature.
A great resource for educators who are looking for collaborative projects with other classrooms.

Beanstalk Stories is just what it claims to be…a global collaboration of kids, by kids, for kids.  Beanstalk Stories is a place where students (under 16) can submit artwork and also write stories to go along with them on the website.  They can write stories based on the artwork of others too.  I know my students would get a kick out of reading a story that someone else had written based on their artwork. Children from around the world have submitted artwork and stories to this site.  It’s fun to see where everyone is from.  Kids will love to see what students in other countries are doing.
Teachers can upload whole classes, submitting their students’ stories and artwork. There are complete directions on how to do this on the site. Beanstalk Stories is colorful and easy to use.  I’m sure I will try this one.

The Internet just keeps getting better and better for us educators.  Join.me lets users share their screens, talk to each other and work together.  I haven’t tried this yet but I know it’s great because I found it on Richard Byrne’s blog, Free Technology for Teachers, and he hasn’t steered me wrong yet.
Richard gives a great application for classroom use with this tool, “Join.me could be a very handy tool for sharing your screen with students to walk them through an application or give to give a virtual presentation.”  They can see your screen on their screen.  This is amazing.
Richard also suggests that  ”Join.me could also be useful for professional development in which you’re introducing colleagues to the ins and outs of program.”  This would be so helpful for the teachers at my school for showing and demonstrating new ways of integrating technology tools into the classroom.
I’m excited by the possibilities and I can’t wait to try it out.  Also this may make it easier to help my less than techie family and friends (I won’t name names) with their computer problems, if I can see what is actually going on with their computer.
