Take another look at ABCya! @ABCyaGames
After a comment on this blog from Magical Teacher I thought I would go and take a look at ABCya, a well known site for academic games. I hadn’t used it lately and WOW was I surprised. I love the new look of ABCya! When did it happen? I think it is much more appealing in look for grades 3-5 than before. Of course, it remains very appealing to grades K-2.
#elemchat #spedchat #games
The site is extremely easy to navigate and find exactly what you are looking for. I love that you can just click on a grade (K-5) and up pops a plethora of academic games that are definitely built for engaging kids. Aprox. 40+ games per grade. Nearly every subject is covered under four categories, letters, numbers, other, and holidays. The games are perfect for practicing and refreshing skills learned in class.
If you haven’t seen ABCya! lately or maybe never at all, make sure you check it out. It’s a winner!
From the site: “ABCya.com is the leader in free educational kids computer games and activities for elementary students to learn on the web. All children’s educational computer activities were created or approved by certified school teachers. All educational games are free and are modeled from primary grade lessons and enhanced to provide an interactive way for children to learn.

Grade level lessons incorporate areas such as math and language arts while introducing basic computer skills. Many of the kindergarten and first grade activities are equipped with sound to enhance understanding.
Fun children’s Holiday activities are available in grade level sections!”

“Lure of the Labyrinth is a digital game for middle-school pre-algebra students. It includes a wealth of intriguing math-based puzzles wrapped into an exciting narrative game in which students work to find their lost pet - and save the world from monsters! Linked to both national and state mathematics standards, the game gives students a chance to actually think like mathematicians.”
There is a wealth of information for teachers as well as resources you will need to use the game in your classroom. Students need to register to play the game but do not have to provide an email address.

Viral Vinnie Presents Gut Instinct is a neat site where students use their gut instinct (or knowledge) to answer questions. Students may choose math, science, or English questions. Students can play against each other or play all players online. Great visuals and sound effects make this site extremely appealing to kids. Aimed at grades 6-8.

Communicating Ideas using Posters, Newspapers, and Comics is a fabulous interactive resource for students. Each interactive teaches about its subject through a neat little animated cartoon and when finished students can use the site’s tools to create their own (poster, newspaper,or comic). The final product can be printed. Totally terrific! Students will love this one for sure.
Added this to my Write On! for Kids LiveBinder.

BBC - CBBC - Websites and shows

This is a complete list. CBBC provides excellent educational content for kids. Students can create a free account to access many neat games/interactives. No e-mail is required, only teacher or parent permission. This resource is one fun ride.

Screenshot of Beat the Boss, a game where students must design a product better than the boss can. Lots of trial and error…plenting of thinking going on here.

The CBBC websites are like a mix of PBS (educational) and Cartoon Network (great visuals). Check this one out!

I am so excited to share this resource! FRABOOM Online Children’s Museum is a FANTASTIC (mostly free), educational website for kids. It is the epitome of Web 2.0. Features include games/interactives, Fraboom TV, interactive books and live classes. Yes! You read me right…LIVE CLASSES for Kids.

Screenshot of Live Class
The classes feature a live teacher who interacts with the kids online while teaching them. Students can send messages to the teacher and receive a reply. I just participated in a fun drawing class and the teacher responded to me as well as the other “kids” in the class. How cool it is for kids to have their names heard online as well as their work shared with everyone in the class.
This site is a total winner!

I am totally in love with this interactive!!! It is one of the coolest drawing tools for kids. Finish the picture, save to gallery or computer, and print options available.

Some presidential games available on FRABOOM
Everything that I have shown you here is FREE on Fraboom. Even the live classes although I did not see a schedule for them. The only difference I could find with the free and paid version ($5.99 a month) was a few games.

Check out RedKid’s awesome collection of sign generators. He has created over 60 of them. They are easy to use and very up to date.
Highlights of this collection are: iPod playlist and billboard, The Simpsons (over 60 characters), cell phone, Spongebob and friends, and even the iPad. Oh and don’t let me forget the Wrigley Field Marquee, Home of the Chicago Cubs…we’ll get ‘em this year! LOL
See the screenshot below for a peak at some of the generators available.

Students will enjoy generating their words on these signs. Even students who hate to write will likely enjoy these.
They print out large enough so that they can be used in a variety of projects.
Educational Uses…
Posters
Book Covers
Presentations
They can be saved and uploaded to online presentations too.
Create a word wall using them. The Simpsons collection would be great for that.
Use them in a “slide paper video”.
Use for a bulletin board on class rules or procedures.
I’m sure this list could go on but as you know I like short posts.

I just downloaded KidZui’s free browser tonight and am pretty impressed. The interface is great and most of the educational game sites came up ad free. I don’t know how they achieved this but I liked that alot. The only ad was one advertising a kid’s movie. Not too bad.
The browser is easy for younger kids to navigate. I found the sites that were gathered from my search very kid-friendly and engaging. Kids can play games, access educational sites through searches and watch videos. To be honest I found a couple of interesting sites that I had never seen before (upcoming posts).
The browser can be monitored by a parent or teacher. You do have to create an account to download the Kidzui Browser. I do recommend looking into the Kidzui browser especially for primary students. I am planning to recommend this to the primary teachers at my school and hope they try it out.
Check it out and let me know what you think.

NeoK12 is an amazing site for science education. Not only does it cover a huge amount of subjects but students can also create presentations, based on what they have learned, that can be viewed online and/or printed.
Students will love the ease of use and be able to start on their project rather quickly after a few minutes of instruction.
But wait it gets better! Students can also view videos, and play educational games/puzzles.Teachers can access printables as well as online quizzes.
NeoK12 is spot on when it comes to a well put together site where kids can learn about science online and share what they know.
You can find NeoK12 in my Sensational Science Sites LiveBinder along with many other great science sites.

Sporacle has a wide array of timed quizzes. Theses are great for classroom competitions as well a individuals trying to beat their own personal best.
The subjects include: science, geography, history, literature, language and others that are just for fun.
I think students could even work in groups on many of these.
I really liked this game where you had to come up with the most common 100 English words in 12 minutes.
Members can also create up to 7 games a month. Membership is free. You do not need to be a member to play the games.
Educational Idea: Students can create games to help them study or to be part of a class presentation.
