Ellen McHenry’s Basement Workshop

Ellen has “been building and inventing educational things for the past 20 years, including educational games, projects, songs, activities, skits, plays, textbooks, hands-on science exhibits, and published books.”
She is now working her way through “the stacks of things sitting on my shelves, digitalizing them, and posting them for anyone who might find them useful. Individual items are posted as FREE DOWNLOADS.”
Lucky for us!
What I really think you might like is her free downloads that include games and units. Lots of neat science stuff but she also has some great things for other subjects.
I have listed just a few of the neat items I discovered looking through the science tabs
Screenshot of all categories below.
Ellen has also just added a YouTube channel to her resources that focuses on science.

“Electronic Field Trips teach students core subject matter using national parks as classrooms, which they may never get a chance to visit otherwise. Each EFT consists of two components: 1) a televised broadcast from a national park featuring National Park Service Rangers and youth hosts and 2) a website featuring downloadable lesson plans for teachers and interactive games for students. The broadcast and the website complement each other, providing a rich experience for students. Click here to view the Saguaro EFT website.
There are five lessons and games available on the companion website to prepare your students for this field trip. They are superb!

***There are 35+ geography, topography, and maps games available from Games.co.za
Topography isn’t always as easy as it seems. Where is that country in Africa exactly? What’s the capital of that Asian country again? Where was that river in Europe? Topography is about the description of geographic features and landmarks and the names of places.
Test your knowledge of topography here in one of our maps of the world games. Pinpoint the right country, city, state, river or mountain range on the map. Choose from maps of different parts of the world and improve your knowledge of them. Do you need an atlas, or can you do it by heart?

Take another look at ABCya! @ABCyaGames
After a comment on this blog from Magical Teacher I thought I would go and take a look at ABCya, a well known site for academic games. I hadn’t used it lately and WOW was I surprised. I love the new look of ABCya! When did it happen? I think it is much more appealing in look for grades 3-5 than before. Of course, it remains very appealing to grades K-2.
#elemchat #spedchat #games
The site is extremely easy to navigate and find exactly what you are looking for. I love that you can just click on a grade (K-5) and up pops a plethora of academic games that are definitely built for engaging kids. Aprox. 40+ games per grade. Nearly every subject is covered under four categories, letters, numbers, other, and holidays. The games are perfect for practicing and refreshing skills learned in class.
If you haven’t seen ABCya! lately or maybe never at all, make sure you check it out. It’s a winner!
From the site: “ABCya.com is the leader in free educational kids computer games and activities for elementary students to learn on the web. LiveBinder Update!
Digital Dialects is a neat site that I found out about from Tim Rylands blog, ICT to Inspire.
#elemchat #spedchat #languages
According to Tim “Digital Dialects is a long established, and superb site, that quietly continues to grow. It contains Flash based animation games for learning phrases, numbers, spelling, verb conjugation and alphabets, in 60 different languages”.
I have added Digital Dialects to
Countries for Kids (under the tab general resources)
Lesson Idea: If your class is studying a specific country or region it would be great if they could learn some words in that language while playing a few fun games.
This is a great binder to use if your school has an “International Day” like my school.
