My Hero Celebrates its 15th anniversary this year. It is a website that gives students access to a wide range of positive role models from many walks of life.  My Hero features stories, videos, artwork, films, etc, about people who make a difference in a positive way.  People that students can admire and learn from. Students will learn valuable lessons from this website and will connect with heroes in a new and meaningful way.  The videos are touching and real and will reach the hearts of your students when viewed. Students will learn about the struggles, many may be similar to theirs, and the joys of heroes featured on the site.

Educational Application: Students can also create their own content and submit it to the site to be published. Lessons incorporating artwork, videos, their own essays or stories about their role models are usually very reflective and educational. Now they can have them published on this wonderful site.

There are hundreds if not thousands of heroes to learn about here. There are many that will be familiar to students but also many that they will be learning about for the first time. Below is a screenshot of all of the different categories of “Heroes” on the site.  These stories have all been written by people from around the world.  How cool would it be if your students would have their stories among them?

“The MY HERO Project was founded in 1995 by Karen Pritzker, Jeanne Meyers and Rita Stern as a response to the lack of positive role models in the media for children.”
From the site:
“The mission of MY HERO is to use media and technology to celebrate the best of humanity and to empower young people to realize their own potential to effect positive change in the world.”

letterPLAYGROUND is a nice site where you and your students can upload letters (alphabet) that they have designed to be showcased in their online gallery.  Students also have the opportunity to browse through the gallery to see what others have uploaded. Very nice little site.
This find was via Quest Artists.

Artsonia is the world’s largest kids art museum online. It’s a great way to celebrate creativity in the classroom.  Kids develop a sense of pride and will be excited to show their work to others.  Friends and family can leave positive comments on artwork viewed.  Artwork can be accessed by first name or by school. Students can also view  art created by other children from all over the world.  Artsonia has weekly contests and lets the public vote with no registration.
Something for teachers too!  Thousands of Art Project Lesson Plan Starters have been submitted by teachers and are available as a resource for your classroom! You can get great ideas for projects just by viewing their enormous student gallery.
Parents can buy notebooks, journals, mugs, key chains, sketchbooks, etc., created using their child’s art.  These would make nice gifts for grandparents too.  Schools earn 15% when parents purchase custom keepsakes with their child’s artwork – a great fundraiser for your arts program!
